Introduction
Sickle cell disease (SCD) is a disorder due to faulty red blood cell function (hemoglobinopathy), and the most common life-threatening non-communicable disease in children in Africa, where most of these children die before adolescence.
Bone marrow transplantation (BMT) is the only established cure, with over 90% success rates with a compatible family donor; it improves health-related quality of life (HRQoL) and is cost-effective. It is therefore justified medically, ethically and economically.
Drs Pietro Sodani connected to this project, is a leading expert in BMT for hemoglobinopathies. Has eradicating SCD around the world a top priority and leading efforts to translate research into cutting-edge therapies and cures and increase access to cure.
